Golden Hour in the Rockies: A Relaxed Wedding Weekend in Golden, Colorado
There is a unique kind of pressure that comes with being asked to photograph another wedding photographer’s big day. When my dear friend Betsi from Betsi Ewing Weddings https://www.betsiewing.com/ reached out about her and Jeff’s wedding in Golden, Colorado, I was equal parts honored and focused. I knew that capturing their story wasn’t just about the “big” moments; it was about the quiet, intentional ones that made this November weekend so unforgettable.

A Warm Welcome in a Historic Gold Rush Town
The weekend kicked off with a welcome party that set the tone for the entire celebration. Golden, a former gold rush town nestled right at the base of the Rocky Mountains, provided the perfect backdrop.
It didn’t feel like a formal event before their wedding day. In the contrary, it felt like a massive, warm embrace. Everyone who had played a role in Betsi and Jeff’s lives was there. As a destination wedding photographer, I love these multi-day celebrations because they allow the nerves to settle and the genuine stories to surface. I had the chance to meet their families and friends before the big day, notice the quirks and nuances each group of people have, get ready for the next day in a relaxed and fun environment. Seeing both families and friends that surrounds these two made it clear why their bond is so strong.
The First Look: Historic Charm Meets Modern Romance
The wedding day arrived with that crisp, brilliant sunshine you can only find in Colorado during late autumn. We started at a stunning brick Airbnb, full of architectural character and ivy-covered walls.
Betsi was a vision in a high-neck, intricate lace gown. A look that felt both vintage-inspired and timeless. Her veil, embroidered with delicate daisies, added a whimsical touch that perfectly complemented Jeff’s sharp, deep burgundy suit. They shared their first look on a quiet, residential street right outside the Airbnb. There’s something so grounded about starting a wedding day in a neighborhood setting before heading into the wild grandeur of the mountains.
Private Vows at the Vista
As the sun began to dip, we took a short drive to a breathtaking vista overlooking the Rockies. I’ll be honest: it was freezing. But Betsi and Jeff (and our incredible team) were absolute troopers. We chased the last 30 minutes of golden sun rays as the sun sank behind the spruce trees, painting the mountains in shades of amber. It was in this silence, away from the crowds and the schedule, that they chose to read their private vows. Watching them huddled together against the cold, focused only on each other’s words, was the highlight of the day.
Photographing the wedding of another photographer is a reminder that the best images are less about the composition and technical perfection and more about the depth of our connection.
An Italian Celebration at Bella Colibri
We headed back into the heart of Golden to Bella Colibri. This venue is a hidden gem, offering an intimate, sophisticated atmosphere that felt like a cozy dinner party in the Italian countryside villa.

The evening was a blur of:
- Incredible Italian cuisine that kept everyone’s spirits high.
- Intimate toasts in a room filled with exposed brick and candlelight.
- Details like their incredible wedding cake and beautiful flowers mixed with citrus and pomegranate as their table arrangements
Every detail, from the pink orchids in her bouquet to the vintage stamps on their invitations, reflected a couple with an eye for design and a heart for tradition.
