A Moody Hacienda Editorial at Las Aves
Last July I got to be part of something I don’t get to do often as a wedding photographer: build a day from scratch instead of documenting one. No timeline anxiety, no in-laws to manage, no rain plan. Just a concept, a killer venue, and a team that knew exactly what they wanted to make.
Kaybebe Photography brought this one together, with Byndd Agency running design and production at Hacienda Las Aves. The brief was old-world romance with an edge. Think Spanish revival architecture, deep burgundy velvet, dark moody florals, and two looks that swung from sheer black-and-white lace to a full red-curtain moment that felt like it belonged on a film set.
The setting
Hacienda Las Aves does a lot of the work on its own. White stucco, arched doorways, terracotta roof tiles, that California-Spanish silhouette against palm trees. We used it two ways: bright and sunlit for the ceremony-style portraits out front, and almost entirely in shadow for a black-and-white series under the arches that turned the architecture into pure geometry.
The ceremony setup leaned into the venue’s natural greenery, caned bentwood chairs dressed simply with trailing florals down the aisle, no big floral arch needed because the hedge backdrop already did the job.
The florals and tablescape
Jupiter Floral went dark on purpose. Burgundy scabiosa, deep red dahlias, ivory garden roses, trailing ivy, and dried elements mixed in so nothing felt too polished. It’s the kind of arrangement that photographs better in person than any reference photo could promise, especially with directional light hitting the deeper reds.
The tablescape picked up the same palette in miniature. Calla lilies bent into loose, almost architectural lines, paired with a hand-lettered menu card from Honeylust Co. and mismatched glassware that gave the table a collected-over-time feel instead of a rental-house one.
Two looks, two moods
Love___Era from Temecula, CA, provided both gowns and they could not have been more different in feeling. The first: a high-neck, long-sleeve lace gown, almost entirely sheer through the bodice, paired with a cathedral veil for the front-of-venue portraits. The second: a sculptural moment built entirely around red velvet drapery, the bride seated in a sea of fabric, veil pooling across the floor like she’d been dropped into an Old Hollywood still.
Soleil Leon Jewelry kept the accessories minimal. Teardrop earrings, a few simple rings, nothing competing with the lace detail.
Face by Raymie’s beauty work held up across both looks: soft, slightly smoky eyes and a glossy lip that read editorial.
The car
No styled shoot like this is complete without a hero prop, and Byndd brought in a vintage red convertible that ended up stealing a few frames entirely on its own. White heels resting on burgundy leather seats, sunlight cutting hard across the chrome, the bride leaning against the hood in golden hour light. It tied the palette together in a way that felt inevitable once we saw it parked there.
Why this one mattered
Styled shoots get a mixed reputation in this industry. Done lazily, they’re disconnected mood boards with no story. Done well, they’re a chance for a vendor team to test ideas they’d never get to try on an actual wedding day, where there’s no room for risk. This was the second kind. Every vendor on this one showed up with a clear point of view, and Byndd’s production work made sure none of those ideas fought each other.
